of Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of the University of Florida in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science DISSOCIATING COMPONENTS OF COGNITIVE CONTROL USING HIGHDENSITY EVENT-RELATED POTENTIALS: IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTROL, CONFLICT PROCESSING, AND ERROR MONITORING By Michael James Larson May 2004 Chair: William M. Perlstein Major Department: Clinical and Health Psychology Recent theories suggest that cognitive control is a dynamic process instantiated within a fronto-cortical network that implements regulative or strategic control over topdown processes, monitors and detects processing conflicts, and signals for adjustments in performance when necessary. We examined this complement of cognitive control processes behaviorally and neurally. To do this, we acquired high-density brain eventrelated potentials (ERPs) while 24 neurologically-normal participants performed a cued, single-trial Stroop task that temporally dissociated instruction-related regulative processes (i.e., representing and maintaining the attentional demands of the task), from evaluative processes (i.e., conflict processing, error monitoring). Implementation of control was reflected in a right frontal instruction-related slow-wave associated with the more attentionally demanding color-naming task. A mid-to-lateral frontal stimulusrelated conflict N450 was elicited by the incongruent color-naming task condition.

The Role of Event Related Potentials in Pre-Comprehension Processing of Consumers to Marketing Logos

Background: In human behavior study, by peering directly into the brain and assessing distinct patterns, evoked neurons and neuron spike can be more understandable by taking advantages of accurate brain analysis. Objectives: We investigated the role of Event Related Potentials (ERPs) in pre-comprehension processing of consumers to marketing logos.. Materials & Methods: In the framework of an ...

Conflict-Specific Aging Effects Mainly Manifest in Early Information Processing Stages—An ERP Study with Different Conflict Types

Aging is usually accompanied by alterations of cognitive control functions such as conflict processing. Recent research suggests that aging effects on cognitive control seem to vary with degree and source of conflict, and conflict specific aging effects on performance measures as well as neural activation patterns have been shown. However, there is sparse information whether and how aging affec...

Long-Term Exposure to High Altitude Affects Conflict Control in the Conflict-Resolving Stage

The neurocognitive basis of the effect of long-term high altitude exposure on conflict control is unclear. Event related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in a flanker task to investigate the influence of high altitude on conflict control in the high-altitude group (who had lived at high altitude for three years but were born at low altitude) and the low-altitude group (living in low altitude onl...

Temporal course of cognitive control in a picture-word interference task.

The neural correlates of cognitive control in a picture-word interference task were investigated in 13 healthy individuals using event-related potentials. The differences between the incongruent condition and the congruent condition were examined. Behavioral data showed that the task yielded a robust interference effect as indexed by a longer reaction time for the incongruent condition. Scalp e...

Conflict adaptation and cognitive control adjustments following traumatic brain injury.

Survivors of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) often demonstrate impairments in the cognitive control functions of detecting response conflict and signaling for recruitment of cognitive resources to appropriately adjust performance. These cognitive control functions can be measured using conflict adaptation effects, wherein manifestations of conflict detection and processing are reduced follo...
